Indulge yourself with David’s Healthy Eggnog

Wednesday, December 24, 2008
This is a healthy twist on an old Christmas classic. It delivers all of the flavor of the classic nog but without the calories, sugar, or fat. In fact, you’ll save yourself 100 calories and 6 grams of fat. That’s the equivalent of having to do a 25-minute walk to burn off the nog instead of a 45-minute walk.

What’s in it?
1 packet (or scoop) of Protein Plus Meal Replacement Powder
8 ounces of cold water
2 Tbsp. of nonfat milk
4-5 ice cubes
Pinch of freshly ground nutmeg
Pinch of cinnamon

How to make it?

Place the protein powder, water, milk, and ice in a blender, and blend until smooth and frothy, about 1 minute. Pour in a mug, and sprinkle with nutmeg and cinnamon. Serve hot or chilled.

Serves 2
Per serving: 95 calories, 13 g. protein, 6 g. carbohydrate, 2 g. fat, 1 g. saturated fat, 3 g. fiber, 3 g. sugar
Note: Store bought eggnog made with 2% milk = 191 calories, 8.15 g. fat

When you choose to indulge, do so mindfully. Plenty of people indulge without guilt – and they get fat. They have no clue as to how much that piece of cake is setting them back. Know what you are eating and take compensatory actions. For example, when you overdo it on the pasta, go for a long walk afterward. Walk until the mental and physical feeling of fullness dissipates.

If You’re Going to Be Naughty, Be Nice to Your Body

Wednesday, December 17, 2008
Life is too short to forgo good food and drink with friends, especially during the holidays, but wouldn’t it be nice if we could party without packing on the pounds? Actually, there are a few key things we can do to minimize the side effects of stress, hangovers, and ending the year with a bulge.

8 ways to celebrate without the headache and extra weight!

1.    Eat before you drink – Always. Before you head to the party, coat your stomach and prehydrate your system with a protein shake and multivitamin drink (or equivalent solution). This Pre-Party Nosh-Nixer is now available at Bliss.

2.    B-12 it. Don’t depend on alcohol to rev you up. Instead, boost your energy naturally and reduce feelings of stress/fatigue with a few sprays of this 100% pure B-12, berry flavored energy source.

3.    Don’t drink your calories. Stay away from mixed drinks and opt for wine, light beer, champagne or wine with club soda. Try and limit yourself to 1 or 2 drinks.

4.    Chase each drink with at least two glasses of water. Before you sleep, down one more glass of water. All this will prevent dehydration, which causes hangover-like symptoms.

5.    Go lean on your foods. The slimmest choices are usually veggie-based hors d’ouevres. Check out SELF magazine’s wrap up for more advice on how to eat at the party.

6.    Cleanse your system the morning after. When you’re waking up from a hangover, down a protein shake and a vitamin mineral supplement.

7.    Get your butt outside for a power walk or a sweat-induced exercise session. This will help detoxify your body and burn off the excess calories you consumed.

8.    Avoid bingeing on greasy food. Opt for a turkey or buffalo burger or turkey chili. Try and include some veggies in each meal. This will help to neutralize the acid that built up in your body the night before.

Commit to rule 1: Eat before you drink. Think about what type of protein and vitamin solution will help you nix your tendency to nosh at the cocktail party. Make it a point to consume these things an hour before your party. Your body will thank you!
